Nagano Prefecture's Tateshina is a scenic highland sitting at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. During the spring and summer seasons, the place is popular for adventure seekers who wish to take a dip in its cool, refreshing waterfalls surrounded by primitive forest and lush vegetation. In the winter season though, the waterfalls become frozen pillars of blue and white, making it look like a mystical scene straight out of a fantasy movie.

Meet your tour guide and/or group in Tateshina Kogen Kaikan and take a body temperature measurement before proceeding. Then, wearing traditional bamboo-made Japanese snowshoes, stroll along the forest trails through the landscapes draped in snow. Along the way, you'll see green moss peeking through the whitest and finest snow. After about 20 minutes of walking, arrive at the frozen waterfalls or otaki as the locals call it - an experience you won't soon forget. Your knowledgeable local guide will also introduce you to various types of moss that live in the forest.

Return to Tateshina Kogen Kaikan after about an hour. Here, you may cap off your tour with a visit to one of the many hot springs in the area.
