Many consider Abeokuta town an ingress between the physical and the spiritual world with her past shrines alongside ancient caches mixed with a dominating and towering presence of Olomu Rock. An exceptionally unique city erected from former Brazilian and Cuban slaves comprised of countless historical features and achievements well as a scared boulder that many people just see as a natural formation but for the people of Ogun state it was a safe haven during their tribal wars. Our 3-day tour helps you discover the history of the Eyo Empire and the Egba people as well as a glimpse into the colourful, quaint city markets where you can put your bargaining skills to the test.
TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival and Olomu Rock Climbing
There are 2 ways to ways to climb the Olomu Rock, it’s either you use the elevator straight to the panorama viewing point of the city or you’ll climb the ancient steps. 125 steps till you reach the 1st landing, which named after one of the famous warriors. As you go higher you will discover the history and how the Egba people lived and hid inside the Olomu during the Oyo Empire in the 19th century away from their enemies. Since Olomu sits at the top of the hill, with a perfect view of the valley no one was able to locate them. You will also get to meet the priestesses of the Egba people as you get close to the top. “Standing” and “Buried” head structures of Olumo of ancient Egba warriors and leaders are laying in there. When you reach the peak of the rock you will see the panoramic view of Abeokuta, more stories, and songs along the way so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and non-slip hike shoes!
Day 2: Abeokuta City Tour
Make sure to avail your breakfast as you will be having a long day touring around the city of Abeokuta. Your first stop will be the Centenary Hall, it was built in the 1950s to signify the 100 years of peaceful in Abeokuta. Walk down the pictures of Abeokuta as you discover their achievements. The next stop will be the National Museum of Abeokuta, which houses the artifacts of the Egba people. Sculptures, relics, and ancient weapons used by the early settlers for example. The last places will be the market visits and bargain, Abeokuta has 3 major markets all are colorful and tons of quaint products to offer— Kemta Adira, Osiele, and Itoku. Kemta Adira. Kemta Adire generally focuses on selling the traditional tie-dyed cloth “Adire”, Osiele is said as just old as Abeokuta, so if you are into herbal medicines and common ailments this is the perfect market for you. Lastly, Itoku where you get the cheapest and unique bargains on arts, craft, and food!
Day 3: Omo Forest Reserve
A 2hour drive to Omo Reserve awaits, Omo Reserve is home to over 200 species of trees, 125 species of birds and animals namely endangered forest elephants, white-throated monkeys, and chimpanzees.
Day 4: End of Tour
